A Day Out in Dorset

A non-birding day out today which netted me thirty-six species. Today we planned a day out at Hengistbury Head with the dog and stopping off at Verwood to visit my niece on the way home. On the drive down we saw Kestrel, Buzzard and Sparrowhawk. A brief stop at Harbridge Meadows didn’t find the Whooper Swan but did get me Shelduck, Stonechat and Mipit. At Hengistbury we started with a very nice breakfast at the Hiker Cafe  http://www.hikercafe.co.uk/. We then walked over the head, along to Mudeford Spit and then back along the edge of the Harbour to the car. With time to spare we then wandered a mile or so west to the edge of Southbourne. Highlights on the bird side were Peregrine, eleven Ringed Plover and several confiding Stonechats. In all we saw around thirty species.

On the drive home a couple of diversions were made, on the first across Haxton and Everleigh we didn’t find Barn Owl and a drive through Savernake didn’t turn up a Tawny Owl. However yesterday odd sighting of Indian Runner Ducks on a welsh hillside was trumped by a Donkey and two Sheep trotting along the Grand Avenue. You certainly never know what you may come across. IMG_2681 (1024x682)
