A Quiet Local Day

Today started with a drive to Marlborough, mainly for shopping but also took the dog for a walk on the common. It was a lovely morning, frosty and almost no wind. There were very few birds on the common, just Robin, Wren, Blackbird, Goldfinch and Redwing along with  a few pigeons and corvids. On the way home we stopped off to look for the local Little Owls. I have checked the area at least half-a-dozen times recently to no avail. However today I was in luck with both Owls sat out enjoying the morning sunshine. Good to know that they are still around and hopefully they will be breeding again soon. This afternoon I went for a walk from Barbury Castle to Four Mile Clump. With excellent views over the racecourse and plenty of rough grassland I was hoping for a Short-eared Owl but was disappointed. Again very little around, several Yellowhammers, a few Blue and Great Tits and a Great Spotted Woodpecker. Tonight, I had planned to go out on my first Owl drive of the year but with rain forecast have decided to give it a miss. One for another night.
