Two butterflies in the garden would normally not be commented on but this year it is noteworthy. A male Orange Tip and a White of some sort were seen this afternoon. On the evening dog walk there were eight singing Corn Buntings along with three not singing. Three Skylarks and a single Yellowhammer were also heard. A few Swallows and House Martins were low over the fields and half-a-dozen LBB Gulls passed over.

Hi Malcolm,
I went to Winterbourne Down last week . There are acres of wildflower-rich meadow there with a wide selection of plant species many of which were in full bloom. In 3 1/2 hours we didn’t see a single butterfly – not one. Bumblebees were also sadly lacking though there were a handful. (generally these seem to have increased suddenly in the last week). It would be interesting to know if there are any in a couple of weeks when WOS go. I’m away so won’t be able to go on that trip.
Regards,
Caroline Street
Not a good situation at all. I imagine that there will be a knock on effect on the food chain as well with less food for feeding young birds. Another thing I have noticed is a lot less insects splattered on the front of the car when driving.
Did the same today just near me. Walked with a camera where I normally pick up butterflies this time of year and didn’t see any. That is just a rough grass bank. The only difference I could see was the farmer instead of leaving a headland of a few feet has ploughed and sown right up to the rough area.
Hopefully they will appear soon but looking at the forecast msybe not this week.
