Rest of the weekend

Saturday afternoon saw me heading up to High Clear Down. Several Linnets, Corn Buntings and Yellowhammers were around along with singles of Yellow Wagtail and Raven. A Tawny Owl calling from the woods at around four in the afternoon was unexpected. High Clear Down was surprisingly almost devoid of butterflies but a stunning male Redstart was some compensation. Back at home there were still good numbers of Red Admiral and Peacock butterflies in the garden. An early morning visit to Twitchers on Sunday was quiet with the Black Terns from yesterday gone. A stop at Draycot on the way home gave a couple of Spotted Flycatchers a Swift and a Raven. In the afternoon on a walk around Barbury Castle a few Common Blues were on the wing and a quick visit to the floodwater at Coate added seven Lapwing and six Teal to the day list. So holidays over for now and for my birthday tomorrow it is back to work.

  1. I had Tawny Owl calling at Ravensroost Wood this afternoon [about 3.30pm]; the usual hooting plus a funny long fluttering quivering call! Did the weekly butterfly transect walk at Barbury yesterday, only saw 3 Common Blues but counted 33 Chalkhill Blues. 12 species in total.
Also an ancient White Admiral at Ravensroost with a Hobby flying over the meadow.

    • Hadn’t thought about Chalkhill Blue as these are pretty well the first blues I have seen this year. Have just looked at the pics to remind myself and yes a few of them were Chalkhills.Very sloppy of me. I need to take binoculars and id book next time. Also saw Meadow Brown, Gatekeeper, Peacock and Large and Small Whites which makes seven species, well short of you but I wasn’t looking that hard.
