Just across the Channel

My sister lives in Northern France near to the Somme Estuary. This as about sixty miles east of Calais. There is a nature reserve here called Marquenterre http://www.marquenterrenature.com. This is a superb reserve in a similar situation to Slimbridge. As the crow flies it is not that far from the south coast but they have many great birds in large numbers that do not make it over here. White Stork, Night Heron and Black-necked Grebe are amongst the breeding birds. As are Spoonbill and this picture is of part of a flock 427 birds on the reserve recently. This beat the previous highest total of 342. Also seen there were a party of eight Black Storks. Well worth a visit if you are ever in the area.
